विभूति योग

The Yoga of Divine Manifestations

Wherever there is glory, beauty, or power — Krishna says: know that to be a spark of my splendour.

Bhagavad Gita Chapter 10 — Summary

Arjuna, having heard Krishna describe himself as the source of everything, asks for something more concrete: tell me your divine glories, by which I may meditate on you, and how I should think of you in the various forms of the world. Chapter 10 is the answer — the vibhuti yoga, the yoga of divine manifestations.

Before the catalogue begins, Krishna makes the philosophical claim that underwrites it: he is the origin of all, everything proceeds from him, and the wise, knowing this, worship him with feeling. To those who are constantly devoted and worship with love, he gives the buddhi-yoga by which they come to him — and, out of compassion, dwelling within them, destroys the darkness born of ignorance with the shining lamp of knowledge.

Then comes one of the most beautiful passages in world scripture. Among the Adityas he is Vishnu; among lights, the radiant sun; among stars, the moon. Of the Vedas he is the Sama; of the senses, the mind; of mountains, Meru. He is the ocean among bodies of water, the Himalaya among immovable things, the lion among beasts, the Ganges among rivers. And the list does not stay safely lofty: he is also the gambling of the fraudulent, and death that carries all away. What holds the litany together is stated at its close — whatever is glorious, beautiful, or powerful anywhere, understand it to spring from a fragment of his splendour. He supports the entire universe with a single fragment of himself.

Key Themes

The lamp of knowledge

Krishna says that out of compassion he dwells within his devotees and destroys the darkness born of ignorance with the shining lamp of knowledge. Realisation here is not achieved by the seeker alone; it is lit from inside by the one being sought.

Divinity as the summit of each kind

The vibhutis follow a consistent logic: within every class of thing, Krishna is its highest instance — the sun among lights, the ocean among waters, the Himalaya among mountains. Divinity is met not by leaving the world but by looking at what is most excellent within it.

Even the dark things

The list includes death that carries all away and the gambling of cheats. The Gita declines to make God the proprietor only of pleasant things; whatever has force in the world derives that force from the same source.

A single fragment

The chapter's closing line reframes everything that preceded it: all this universe is supported by one fragment of Krishna's being. The vast catalogue of glories, taken together, does not exhaust him — it barely begins him.

Krishna cuts the catalogue short — what use are all these details? I support this entire universe with a single fragment of myself.

Where Chapter 10 Sits in the Gita

Chapter 9 revealed the accessibility of devotion. Chapter 10 gives devotion something to hold onto — concrete forms in which the divine can be recognised. But describing glories only sharpens Arjuna's hunger to see them, which is exactly what he asks for, and receives, in Chapter 11.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the vibhutis in Bhagavad Gita Chapter 10?

Vibhutis are Krishna's divine manifestations — the specific forms in which his power and splendour are most visible. He names dozens: the sun among lights, the moon among stars, Meru among mountains, the ocean among waters, the lion among beasts, the Ganges among rivers, and the mind among the senses, among many more.

Why does Krishna list his divine glories to Arjuna?

Arjuna asks for them explicitly, saying he wants concrete forms on which to meditate, since he cannot hold an abstract infinity in mind. Krishna obliges, but caps the list with a warning against taking it as complete: whatever is glorious or powerful anywhere is merely a spark of his splendour, and the whole universe rests on a single fragment of him.
